Silver Dollar Fish (Metynnis argenteus) are prized for their striking appearance and peaceful demeanor, making them popular choices for community aquariums. Their round, disc-shaped bodies and shiny, silver scales give them a distinctive look reminiscent of old-fashioned silver coins. These herbivorous fish are native to South America, where they inhabit slow-moving rivers and flooded areas rich in vegetation. In home aquariums, Silver Dollars thrive in schools and prefer densely planted tanks with plenty of open swimming space. They are relatively easy to care for and will accept a varied diet consisting of plant matter, algae, and commercial herbivore flakes or pellets. Due to their size and schooling behavior, Silver Dollar Fish require spacious tanks of at least 55 gallons or larger to accommodate their needs. They are compatible with a wide range of peaceful tankmates, including tetras, barbs, and other community fish species. Providing adequate filtration and regular water changes is essential to maintain optimal water quality for these active swimmers.
